Oily skin is caused by over-active sebaceous glands and results in oily patches, a dull pallor, uneven texture, spots and even acne. Although often hormonal, oily skin can be caused by over cleansing such as exfoliating too frequently, using harsh soaps and strong astringents. This becomes a vicious circle as this causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.
Other causes of oily skin include hormonal imbalance, medication, poor diet and stress, so it is important to rule out any health problems with your doctor.
It is much better to use skincare that promotes balance. Skincare which contain essential oils are useful such as bergamot, clary sage, juniper and the citrus group. Only exfoliate if spots are not a problem and keep this to once or twice a week. Deep cleanse with clays and seaweed extracts as they will help improve circulation and detoxify the skin. Do not use harsh products, but keep a gentle skincare routine suitable for your skin type. Your diet should be rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and supplemented with fresh air and exercise.
It may be worth remembering that oily skin ages at a slower rate than other skin types!
